Hi Lydia, thanks for your response! Speaking on my experience just a tourist, Singapore does seem like it will be quite suitable. It seems to be very walkable, pedestrian/cycle friendly. Though I don't know if that also applies to the more outskirts part of Singapore as I've never been there.
People would argue that it is possible to build like that in Singapore because Singapore is not as big as Jakarta or any of its surrounding cities. I'm no expert at this, but from my very limited experience playing Cities: Skyline (yeah i know this isn't much haha) I'm sure it would be easier to just plan to slap some roads instead of planning each sidewalks and how citizens can access facilities just by walking or cycling, and how it can be done comfortably.
I do think Jakarta has mixed use developments! Even though each shopping malls often feels like their own fortress, very isolated from outside access. I noticed in some other countries that even big malls are quite accessible from street level. So everything might be in X radius, but I might end up still needing a car anyways. I do believe one aspect we are quite lacking in Indonesia is the connectivity between places. A safe and nicely designed sidewalk and pedestrian access to places might encourage more people to walk/cycle. As you may have noticed even crossing the road is not that easy here.
Again, I feel my view is quite limited. As someone with less access to private vehicles might have different insight into this. Maybe it is actually not that hard to walk around if you are used to not having a car here.
I hope you manage to adapt well here though!
